About Us!
One of my most challenging training sessions was with two
rescued retired greyhounds.
The owner called because the condo building she owned in Washington DC had had a
fire drill. During the drill she found out her dogs couldn’t or wouldn’t go down
stairs. This had never been an issue as they always used the elevators. For her
to remain in the condo, the dogs had to be able to go down stairs in case of an
emergency.
Not having this training issue before, I put a leash on one dog, started towards
the stairs using encouraging voice and treats. Without warning, this dog took a
full leap into air, jumping down about 15 stairs. How he didn’t break his leg or
neck is still a mystery to me.
Rethinking the situation, I got a couple large towels from the owner. I wrapped
one around the stomach area and used it like a handle and put one over the dogs
head. I pushed the dog’s body against the wall, and slowly decended the stairs.
This worked. After a few flights, I was able to remove the head towel. The dog
became surer and more confidant and was able to walk up and down the stairs.
The owner was able to remain in the building without any more stair issues.
